Over the past several months, AquaBlok, Ltd. has been well-represented at various technical events in the sediment remediation industry. The Ohio-based manufacturing company exhibited and presented and was featured in a variety of poster presentations.

“Technical industry events such as these are an important way for AquaBlok to share new materials approaches and project examples that can assist in addressing a range of remediation challenges. At these recent events we focused on PFAS and how our RemBind and AquaGate+RemBind materials are being applied for this application,” says COO John Collins.

AquaBlok participated in the AEHS East Coast Conference at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA followed by the SETAC North America Conference in Toronto. AquaBlok ended their busy conference season with the SERDP/ESTCP Symposium in Washington, D.C.  Summaries of the events and AquaBlok’s participation are as follows:

AEHS 36th Annual International Conference on Soils, Sediments, Water, and Energy, Amherst, MA

At the AEHS Conference, Mr. Collins gave a platform presentation titled, “Integration of Conceptual Site Model, Characterization Data, and Modeling into Groundwater & Sediment Remedies.” Mr. Collins’s presentation was during Session 13: Synergistic Remediation Technology Solutions, which was sponsored by Remediation Partners. Mr. Collins highlighted the value of a Conceptual Site Model (CSM), particularly the CapSim Model developed by Dr. Danny Reible of Texas Tech University. The model, which is commonly used to evaluate reactive caps for contaminated sediment remediation, is available on-line, free of charge.

SETAC North America 40th Annual Conference , Toronto, ON, CA

In November, AquaBlok participated in the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC)’s annual conference. In addition to exhibiting, Mr. Collins gave a poster presentation. “Design, Installation and Quality Control for Organoclay-Based Contaminated Sediment Cap at the East Branch of the Grand Calumet River”. The poster was co-authored by  Mr. Collins and John Hull,   Keir Craigie & Gary Braun from Tetra Tech, Inc., and Joe Jersak from SAO Environmental Consulting.  The poster featured a project in which AquaGate+Organoclay was used as an active cap to address PAH contaminants. An overview of on-site quality control efforts and laboratory sorption testing activities were provided.

SERDP/ESTCP Symposium, Washington, D.C.

AquaBlok ended its busy conference season at the SERDP/ESTCP Symposium in Washington, D.C. in December. This conference focuses on the Department of Defense’s (DoD’s) priority environmental and installation energy issues and is the largest of its kind. Mr. Collins, as well as AquaBlok’s new Environmental Engineer Moses Ajemigbitse, attended several technical sessions highlighting research and technologies that address complex environmental challenges.

In addition to exhibiting and presenting at these events, Mr. Collins and Dr. Ajemigbitse spoke with representatives from state and federal agencies, environmental engineer and consulting firms, academia, and other individuals from a range industries.
